Dr. Luke Harrington is significantly advancing our understanding of climate change impacts and adaptations.
Most communities do not experience climate change via shifts in the mean climate. It’s more recognised in increasingly intense and frequent weather events, like Cyclone Gabrielle. Dr. Harrington’s work in the field of ‘extreme event attribution’ seeks to quantify whether climate change makes individual extreme weather events more severe or more likely.
He also examines how climate change hazards disproportionately affect the world’s poorest communities, particularly those least responsible for climate change. Finally, he explores the implications of these inequities, including questions of liability, loss and damage, with a view to building an inventory of extreme weather impacts which can be attributed to climate change.
Dr. Luke Harrington is a 2023 finalist in the Waikato Regional Council Environmental Science Award and the Hamilton City Council Emerging Scientist Award.
