Kamal Nair is HoD science for a decile 2 school in rural Tokoroa with a 54% Maori, and 7% Pasifika roll. He models a student-centered classroom, fostering critical thinking skills, collaboration, communication, creativity and innovation.

Nair sees students at risk of falling behind on a weekly basis. He actively seeks out science opportunities, such as the inaugural Science Spinners event and Te Huakirangi Maori summer school camp at the University of Waikato.

Nair contributes hugely to the welfare of the school and its students through activities such as football coaching and camps and is also part of an MoE initiative to build sport and leisure into mainstream subjects. His commitment is reflected in outstanding NCEA science results.
