The Body Condition Score (BCS) of a dairy cow is a critical measure of its productive and reproductive potential. Currently, BCS scores are assigned by a trained assessor.

These human judgements can be subjective or perceived as such by the farmer. With large herds, stamina and time become factors and a sample may be scored as an indication of the herd’s condition. These and other issues limit the power of BCS information.

Dr Catchpole’s team has developed an objective, automated system using 3-D camera technology that overcomes these limitations. The system will help farmers make better management and nutritional decisions, improving animal health and profitability.
